Jason Hansman, a combat veteran of the war in Iraq, received SPI’s Social Justice for Veterans award for his outstanding work in helping veterans transition to civilian life.Before joining the Board he served on SPI’s Veterans Advisory Council and will continue to serve on the Council.Jason is a Senior Program Manager at Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA).
Jennifer Rivera, a Captain in the U.S. Army during the Gulf War, is the Director of Human Resources at Fountain House Inc., a mental health organization that is in the process of expanding its services to the veteran community. As a veteran, she is in the forefront of this project designed to serve the needs of veterans.
Herbert Hendin, M.D. is Medical Director and CEO of Suicide Prevention Initiatives (SPI) and Professor of Psychiatry at New York Medical College. He has been Principal Investigator in the U.S. on projects involving college students, African Americans, and veterans of the wars in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan and abroad in the Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands, and Hungary. He has done extensive research in the areas of posttraumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, assisted suicide and end-of-life care. Vincent McGowan, U.S Marine Corps combat veteran of the war in Vietnam, is Founding President of United War Veteran’s Council. In that capacity he organizes the annual Veterans Day Parade in New York City. Vincent is Chair of the Veterans Advisory Board of NYC. He is Chair of SPI’s Veterans Advisory Council. He is the Chief Operating Officer of Battery Park City Parks Conservancy.
