Youth Suicide Prevention

The suicide rate of adolescents and young adults in the United States, and much of the Western world, has tripled in the last sixty years. SPI is undertaking a long term effort to improve the treatment of young people who are preoccupied with suicide or have made suicide attempts. SPI’s youth suicide prevention program has been initiated at the Columbia University Medical Center where, led by Professor Laura Mufson, researchers are initiating a program of Interpersonal Psychotherapy, combined with medication when indicated, that has been shown to be successful with adolescents who are depressed.  It is being adapted to treat youngsters who are preoccupied with suicide or have made suicide attempts.
